Artificial intelligence is the ability of machines to perform tasks that are typically associated with human intelligence, such as learning and problem-solving. Chatbots and virtual assistants based on generative AI (eg. Siri) can rely on Natural Language Processing to improve efficiency. Generative systems such as ChatGPT, Bard, and DALL-E are quickly becoming ubiquitous in modern discourse, and have raised many complicated questions about their use and misuse. What does this mean for you, and how can you make use of them? This presentation will provide an overview of the capabilities and issues surrounding these services, as well as an interactive forum to highlight what they can or cannot (and, perhaps, should or should not) be used for.
Presented by Jacob Adler, the Metadata and Cataloging Librarian at the Bronx Community College Library. He is a member of the BCC working group investigating the use and potentiality of generative systems such as ChatGPT and Bard, and is the author of a subject guide on Generative Systems accessible via the BCC Library website.
