Via Zoom.
This inspirational lecture-recital explores the treasury of songs and instrumentals written by black popular composers from the Civil War to the Great Depression. As an African American, it was extraordinarily hard to make a mark in commercial music. Yet time and again, individuals were able to break through, creating some of the most innovative and inspirational music of the era – or any era.
Featuring works by Jelly Roll Morton, Thomas “Fats” Waller, Scott Joplin, and many others.
Peter Muir studied at the Royal College of Music in London and earned a Ph.D. in historic musicology from CUNY.
