SUMMARY:Lewisboro Library Book Group: "Erasure"
DESCRIPTION:The Lewisboro Library Book Group usually meets at the Library on the last Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. \nThis month the group will be discussing Erasure\, by Percival Everett. The novel is about a Black upper-class author whose novels receive academic praise\, but sell poorly due to not being “Black enough.” Frustrated\, he writes a deliberately offensive stereotypical novel that accidentally becomes a best-seller\, sending him on a winding journey of identity\, grief\, and defining Blackness\, blurring the lines between satire and reality. In 2023 Erasure was made into a film and renamed American Fiction. It won an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.\n \nBooks are available through the Westchester Library System and copies are often ordered in advance for members to pick up at the Library. New members are always welcome in this adult\, co-ed book group. For more information contact Myrna or Steve Shomstein at (914) 533-2550.

SUMMARY:(Virtual) "Women's Work"
DESCRIPTION:Via Zoom. Presented by the New York Historical\, in celebration of Women’s History Month. \nWhat is “women’s work?” How have broad trends in American economic\, legal\, and political history encouraged women to take certain jobs and restricted them from “men’s work?” How have race\, ethnicity\, social class\, legal status\, sexual orientation\, and gender presentation impacted these distinctions? \nThe Center for Women’s History showcases approximately 45 objects from New York Historical’s own Museum and Library collections to demonstrate how ‘women’s work’ defies categorization. The items range from a 19th-century mahogany cradle to a 20th-century doctor’s dissection kit to a pinback button with the message “Shirley Chisholm for President.” \nPlease register HERE to receive your Zoom link. \n

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Michael Garber\, "Songs She Wrote"
DESCRIPTION:In honor of Women’s History Month\, local author Michael Garber is doing a presentation based on his new book Songs She Wrote: Forty Hits by Pioneering Women of Popular Music. \n\nIn Songs She Wrote\, Michael Garber celebrates women’s contributions to popular music by looking at dozens of well- known figures like Billie Holiday\, Peggy Lee\, and Dorothy Parker as well as unearthing more unknown women who made major contributions. The book explores the style and artistry of female songwriters\, lyricists\, and composers in the first half of the twentieth century and provides intriguing backstories and analysis of forty hits. Learn about Maria Grever (“What a Difference a Day Made”) who was the first female Mexican composer to achieve international acclaim and the fascinating story of African American lyricist Lucy Fletcher (“Sugar Blues”)\, among many others in the book. \n\n\n\n\nWomen in the popular music business went through struggles different from their male colleagues\, making their triumphs all the more impressive. These individual and diverse sagas combine to convey an epic tale about women songwriters in the world of American popular music. \n\n\n\nMichael G. Garber is an internationally respected historian of Tin Pan Alley and the American musical on stage and screen. He is an award-winning college teacher and has been a research fellow of the University of Winchester and the University of London\, Goldsmiths College. He is also the author of My Melancholy Baby: The First Ballads of the Great American Songbook\, 1902-1913.\n\n\nPlease register below.

SUMMARY:"Beyond Therapy" - Live Theater at the Library!

SUMMARY:Author Talk with Fiona Davis: "The Stolen Queen"
DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to welcome back New York Times bestselling author Fiona Davis\, to talk about her latest novel The Stolen Queen. \n\nNo one brings New York City to life like Fiona Davis. For nearly a decade\, Davis has introduced readers to the fascinating and often little known histories behind some of New York City’s most iconic landmarks through the eyes of female characters living or working at the buildings. Her previous bestsellers include The Lions of Fifth Avenue\, set at the New York Public Library\, and The Spectacular set at Radio City Music Hall. \n\n\n\nIn her enthralling eighth novel\, The Stolen Queen\, Fiona Davis delights readers with a story centered on the Metropolitan Museum of Art and its famed Met Gala\, while for the first time\, exploring a territory beyond New York City – Egypt’s Valley of the Kings. The novel alternates between Egypt in 1936 and New York City in 1978\, as two women from different generations are thrown together after a Met Gala goes horribly wrong. \n\nFiona’s talk will be followed by a book signing. Our thanks to Ridgefield’s Books on the Common\, which will be providing books for sale at this event. \n\nNot to be missed – Fiona’s visits always offer intriguing\, behind-the-scenes insights at the research that goes into each of her novels! \n\nSpace is limited. Please register below.

SUMMARY:Afternoon Film: "Here"
DESCRIPTION:Here is a 2024 film that details the events of a single plot of land and its inhabitants\, spanning from the distant past to the 21st century. Told in a unique format\, the screen is often subdivided into multiple panes\, presenting events from different time periods simultaneously. The film reunites Tom Hanks and Robin Wright (Forrest Gump)\, and sparked some controversy by using digital de-aging to allow the actors to portray their characters over the course of the different time periods. \nPlease register below.
