SUMMARY:(Virtual) The History of Slavery in Lewisboro
DESCRIPTION:Registration is now FULL for this program.\nVia Zoom. \nDid you know that South Salem was previously known as Lower Salem\, to distinguish it from adjacent North Salem? North Salem and Lower Salem were\, prior to 1783\, contained within the larger town of Salem.  Lower Salem was home to several prominent slave-holding families in the early 19th century\, as well as those with indentured individuals. This program\, led by Town Historian Maureen Koehl\, will highlight those families and what we have learned about the people who labored for them\, including the story of Old Tower\, a freed slave. Maureen will also discuss whether Salem might have been part of the Underground Railroad as well as the timeline of New York’s abolition of slavery.

SUMMARY:(Virtual) Navigating College Admissions During Covid-19
DESCRIPTION:Via Zoom. \nWe are offering this Zoom presentation to help families understand how COVID-19 is changing the college admissions landscape and how it will affect Freshmen\, Sophomores\, and Juniors. \nThe college admissions process is undergoing significant and lasting changes as many colleges and universities have gone test optional for this current admissions cycle and will evaluate their standardized testing policies going forward. With the opportunity for visiting colleges curtailed\, we’ll discuss how students can engage with colleges virtually to help them develop a preliminary list of colleges to consider visiting when campuses are fully open. \nWe will discuss the holistic review process and focus on the greater consideration admissions officers will give to extracurricular activities as they will have fewer data points to rely on due to the disruptions from COVID-19. Learn how admissions officers are handling the current situation and how students can position themselves to develop a compelling narrative to increase their chances for admission. \nWe will also discuss the importance of community service\, how it can provide an opportunity for personal growth and an opportunity to showcase a student’s character. Admissions officers\, especially due to the effects from the pandemic\, are placing a great emphasis on a student’s character and how the student has been able to give back and help others during these challenging times. \nThe presentation will be led by Ron Feuchs and Jackie Tepper\, partners at Stand Out For College\, LLC. \nPlease RSVP to ron@standoutforcollege.com.  You will receive a private invitation with a Zoom link in reply. There is no charge for this event.

SUMMARY:(Virtual) Introduction to Ungardening: how to build your yard's connection with nature.
DESCRIPTION:Via Zoom. \nMany of our conventional gardening and yard care practices can disrupt the flow between our yards and the wild ecosystems that surround them. This creates imbalances that cause issues for humans and the natural world alike. By questioning these habits and practices and opting for native plants and restoration focused yard care\, we can help our yards be both functional spaces and functional habitats. \nSpeaker Aubree Keurajian is an ecologist located in central Connecticut. She has a bachelor’s degree in the Science of Natural and Environmental Systems from Cornell University\, and currently runs Ungardening Native Plants\, a restoration ecology consultation service and native plant nursery striving to bring restoration to small scale homeowners. She is a senior botanist at Davison Environmental and a member of the Connecticut Native Plant Working Group. Check her out online at ungardening.org or on Instagram @ungardening. \nSponsored by the Lewisboro Garden Club. \nPlease register HERE to receive your Zoom link.
