SUMMARY:(Virtual) Westchester's Holiday Image-Makers
DESCRIPTION:Via Zoom. \nChristmas was declared a federal holiday in 1870. The American holiday season as we now know it evolved during the 19th and early 20th century\, mainly due to works of authors\, artists\, and songwriters\, most of whom had ties to Westchester County. Barbara Davis\, Co-Director of the Westchester County Historical Society\, traces the evolution of the traditions while introducing the Westchester holiday “image makers” and their impact on the holiday observances. A sampler of celebrations at Westchester’s historic sites will also be highlighted.\n \nThis program is brought to you by Warner Library\, Dobbs Ferry Public Library\, Lewisboro Library\, and Putnam Valley Library.\n \nPlease register for the Zoom link HERE.

SUMMARY:(Virtual) Hacking Disability: Accessible & Adaptable Tech
DESCRIPTION:Via Zoom. \nIn 2015\, after over a decade of programming\, Dr. Naomi Saphra lost the ability to type. Confronted with a programmer’s worst nightmare\, she began the slow process of learning to dictate code. While attempting to customize her environment\, she was confronted with paternalistic attitudes towards disabled people\, which framed accessibility as “accommodation.” \nOften\, accommodations and products for disabled people have a rigid model for their use – but the needs of the disabled are diverse\, and disabled people are perfectly capable of improving on the technology that they are offered. Like the diabetic hackers\, who discovered that they could hack into their insulin pumps to make the device smarter\, and shared step-by-step instructions online for others. \nIn this Tech Talk\, Dr. Saphra will talk about the intersection of technology and disability\, and the need for accessible systems that are open and adaptable\, to allow people like Dr. Saphra to improve the tools they use. \nPlease register HERE for the Zoom link.

SUMMARY:Community Crafters: Sweet Valentine Surprises
DESCRIPTION:We have another great project for those who love to craft – and give back to others in our community! \nIn the Victorian era\, flowers were assigned secret meanings using the “language of flowers” or floriography. Tussie-mussies\, or small flower bouquets\, were often given to express feelings without having to speak. \nWe will be making Victorian “tussie-mussies” using doilies\, ribbons and paper filled with silk roses and greenery as well as some handmade “truffle roses”. The tussie-mussies will be part of a Valentine gift bag of goodies for Homebound Senior Adults in Lewisboro. \nThank you to Peter Rose for supplying the special treats for our gift bag\, and to Priscilla Luckow for donating the supplies. \nPlease register below.

DESCRIPTION:(Via Zoom)  \nThe Tuskegee Airmen were a group of primarily African American military pilots and airmen who fought in World War II. This presentation tells the story of how they took down enemy aircraft abroad – and racial barriers at home. \nLearn how the work of the Tuskegee Airmen changed attitudes about blacks in the military\, and the valuable lessons learned by other minority groups seeking to advance their rights. Discuss how today’s racial tensions compare to those during the time of the Tuskegee Airmen.\n \nThis program will be presented by Jeff Urbin\, the Education Specialist for the FDR Presidential Library & Museum. (You may remember Jeff from the wonderful program on the Packhorse librarians he gave in November.) It is co-sponsored by the Lewisboro\, Hendrick Hudson and Pound Ridge libraries. \nPlease register for the Zoom link HERE.

SUMMARY:(Virtual) Navigating College Admissions Successfully in 2023
DESCRIPTION:Via Zoom. This program is recommended for parents and their high school teens. \nThis Zoom presentation will help families understand how the lingering effects from the pandemic have changed the college admissions landscape for Juniors\, Sophomores and Freshmen. \nEach college admissions cycle is increasingly competitive. Many schools had record numbers of applicants. Record high numbers of applications result in record low acceptance rates which is what most popular colleges and universities experienced this past admissions cycle. \nLearn about current college admissions trends\, the importance of researching and visiting colleges to find schools that are a good fit for your child\, a timeline and other action steps that can be taken to make this second half of the school year productive and help reduce the stress around the college admissions process. Examine the holistic admissions review process\, what admissions officers consider important when they review applicants\, and how students can position themselves to develop a compelling narrative to increase their chances for admission. \nHear about the importance of community service\, how it can provide an opportunity for personal growth and a way to showcase a student’s character. Admissions officers place great emphasis on a student’s character and how the student has been able to give back and help others. \nClick HERE to register for the Zoom link. If this date does not work\, the session will also be offered on January 25 and March 15. \nThe presentation will be led by Ron Feuchs and Jackie Tepper\, partners at Stand Out For College\, LLC.
