SUMMARY:(Virtual) "Alice's Ordinary People" - Presentation and Discussion with Filmmaker Craig Rudnick
DESCRIPTION:Via Zoom. \nAlice’s Ordinary People is a documentary about Alice Tregay\, an unsung heroine of the Civil Rights Movement. Her remarkable story spans the historic period from the marches of Dr. King to the election of Barack Obama – her great contribution is the thread which connects the two. Under the leadership of Reverend Jackson\, the months that Alice and her “ordinary people” spent picketing led to real change. It was through her Political Education class that Alice had her most significant impact. Over a four year period\, thousands were trained to work in independent political campaigns. \nJoin documentarian Craig Dudnick as he discusses the film and gives us an overview of the Civil Rights Movement as well as Alice’s role in bringing politics to the Movement. \nAlice’s Ordinary People is available free on Kanopy\, the Library’s streaming media service. Attendees are encouraged to watch the film beforehand\, but it is not required. \nPlease register below to receive your Zoom link.  It will be sent two days prior to the program. \nThat evening\, you can join the webinar via the link below: \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/84649589548?pwd=NDlVaEVoeGZUU09GVkhoUHJ4V1h3QT09Passcode: 806835 \n

SUMMARY:(Virtual) How to Successfully Navigate College Admissions in 2022
DESCRIPTION:Via Zoom. \nThis virtual presentation will help families understand how COVID-19 has changed the college admissions landscape and how it affects Juniors\, Sophomores and Freshmen. \nThe recent college admissions cycle is highly competitive due to two factors: most colleges went test-optional due to the pandemic and colleges increased their outreach to high school students resulting in a record number of candidates applying. These record high numbers of applications resulted in record low acceptance rates. \nDiscover the importance of researching and visiting colleges to find schools that can be a good fit for your child and other actions steps to take this spring for a smoother college admissions process. Learn what admissions officers consider important when they review applicants\, and how students can position themselves to develop a compelling narrative to increase their chances for admission. \nWe will also discuss the importance of community service\, how it provides personal growth and an opportunity to showcase a student’s character. Admissions officers place great emphasis on a student’s character and how the student has been able to give back and help others\, especially during these challenging times. \nThe presentation will be led by Ron Feuchs and Jackie Tepper\, partners at Stand Out For College\, LLC. (www.standoutforcollege.com) Please RSVP to ron@standoutforcollege.com.  You will receive a private invitation with a Zoom link in reply.

SUMMARY:(Virtual) Author Talk: "Extraterrestrial: The First Sign of Intelligent Life Beyond Earth"
DESCRIPTION:Via Zoom. \nA virtual discussion with Harvard’s top astronomer Avi Loeb\, author of Extraterrestrial: The First Sign of Intelligent Life Beyond Earth. In his book\, Professor Loeb lays out his controversial theory that our solar system was recently visited by advanced alien technology from a distant star. \nIn late 2017\, scientists at a Hawaiian observatory glimpsed an object soaring through our inner solar system\, moving so quickly that it could only have come from another star. Avi Loeb’s hypothesis was that it was not an asteroid; it was moving too fast along a strange orbit\, and left no trail of gas or debris in its wake. His explanation: the object was a piece of advanced technology created by a distant alien civilization. \nPlease register HERE for your Zoom link.  Or join via this LINK that day. \nImportant note: This event is being hosted by the Ruth Keeler Memorial Library\, so the registration confirmation and Zoom link will come from Carolyn Reznik\, Director of Ruth Keeler. The link will arrive as soon as you register\, so please check your SPAM email if it doesn’t arrive.
